A sensory banquet of soaring melodies, colourful South American folklore, lively dances and emotional ballads, the music of Jonny Phillips and his F-ire Collective ensemble, Oriole, has garnered much critical acclaim.
After a captivating performance in 2006, Jonny was commissioned this year as part of our Jerwood Jazz Generation to write new music and to organise a unique collaboration with some of Brazil's most acclaimed musicians, including sax/flute virtuoso and Joyce collaborator Teco Cardoso.
As well as a mesmeric late night performance, the group also led a free and hugely popular Latin American rhythms workshop - complete with Brazilian sunshine! - in our outdoor Jazz Marquee.
Press reviews from Jonny's 2007 Cheltenham Jazz Festival concert
"Part of the Jerwood Jazz Generation series, Cheltenham supported Jonny Phillips' Oriole Brazil in expanding his gentle flamenco-samba band with more Brazilian manpower, and the results were hugely rewarding. Music that is gorgeous in melody, in rhythm, in texture, and in the subtlety of its emotional message."
Birmingham Post
"The audience reaction to this beautiful, colourful and exciting music was overwhelming. There is a genuine buzz about Oriole these days and they seem to be gathering a real following in the style of fellow F-ire Collective bands Polar Bear and Acoustic Ladyland."

What makes Jonny Phillips part of our Jerwood Jazz Generation
“I have always enjoyed Oriole with its intelligent and distinctive mix of jazz with Southern European and Brazilian music. When Jonny talked to me about wanting to form a new band by bringing together Thomas Clausen from Denmark and members of Joyce's Brazilian band, I was very happy to give him this opportunity.”
