With the boundaries of jazz now well and truly blurred, the 2006 Jerwood Rising Stars programme closed with a club night, as Sugar Beats supported modern music pioneer, DJ Norman Jay at Subtone nightclub.

A band fusing improvisation with rare groove, funk and other 'back of the stack' influences, Sugar Beats has emerged from Birmingham’s jazz and club scene over the last two years and went down a treat with the sell-out crowd. They hope to release their first album soon.

Comments and reviews about Sugar Beats:

"Killer!"

Mike Chadwick, Jazz FM

"Excellent... a soul-felt groove with a sprinkle of jazz funky vibes and a style unto it's own that simply says, Sugar Beats have landed!"

Bruce Q, Liquid Fusion

"Sugar Beats' mix of jazz and broken beats makes them both danceable and interesting to listen to. They are representative of a jazz scene that appeals to a new young club audience."

Tony Dudley-Evans
