Every year, the Jerwood Rising Stars series features a collaboration between a young British jazz artist and renowned international musicians.
Julian Siegel’s exclusive performance with two excellent American musicians, Greg Cohen - who played at the Festival in 2005 with Ornette Coleman - and Joey Baron, was hotly anticipated by critics and audience alike and his Jerwood collaboration was a highlight of the Festival.
Julian commented: "Playing in trio with Joey and Greg was a great thrill for me. I was knocked out by their playing, with their sense of time and swing, with the freedom and wide-open attitude with which they played my music. I loved the sound we got together as a band. I think I learned so much from the collaboration and it's left me really hungry to do more playing with them. I am working on getting the band together to do plenty more gigs - this is certainly not a one-off collaboration."
Julian, Joey and Greg also performed at the Festival as part of BBC Radio 3's live broadcast from Cheltenham of the late night contemporary jazz programme, Jazz On 3.
Comments and reviews from Julian Siegel's Cheltenham Jazz Festival 2006 performances:
"the outstanding collaboration of the weekend was the one involving multi-reedist Julian Siegel, irrepressible American drummer Joey Baron and in demand bassist Greg Cohen. The successful marriage of Siegel's highly charged, rhythmic compositions on tenor, clarinet and bass clarinet, was a joy to listen to, while the manically grinning Baron looked like all his Christmases had come at once... a genuine Cheltenham moment."
Jazzwise
"this was the best transatlantic/generational collaboration yet, with Siegel not only matching the stature of the great Americans, but the trio showing a cohesion and pleasure in playing together that must surely result in some repeat gigs and a recording."

"I have been a fan of Julian’s strong, forceful playing for some time, especially in his band Partisans. He seems to come between the generation of British jazz players who emerged in the '80s, such as Loose Tubes and the Jazz Warriors, and the F-IRE Collective generation of 2000 onward."
