We kicked off our acclaimed Everyman Theatre series with a top notch double bill of two of the brightest players on the UK jazz scene - Dave Stapleton and Julian Siegel.  The Jerwood Rising Stars series is always full of hidden gems, and this opening set by DSQ was certainly one of them.

Cardiff-based pianist Dave Stapleton is influenced by everything from the warm, contemporary jazz of the ECM label to the film scores of Philip Glass to the avant garde of Keith Jarrett.  Along with his precociously talented band, he is forging a solid reputation as an innovative composer and band leader and has won rave reviews for his latest album.

Comments and reviews from Dave Stapleton's Cheltenham Jazz Festival 2006 performance:

"Dave Stapleton's quintet performed tunes from their current CD, 'When Life Was In Black and White'.  Allowing his European classical background to shine through in compositions of arresting melodic continuity, his band succeeded not so much through individual voices, but by the strength of their collective musical personality."

Observer

"Interestingly, the choice of Dave Stapleton came entirely from listening to the recorded material he sent me. It is also good to have in Cheltenham a group from the strong Welsh scene."
